  • Silicon Valley Study Tour (SVST)

    Silicon Valley Study Tour (SVST)

Since 2005, SVST (https://www.siliconvalleystudytour.com) has been bringing students and young recent graduates to Silicon Valley.

The goal is to create a bridge between young Italians and researchers, founders, managers, entrepreneurs, business angels, VC executives, engineers, designers and professors in Silicon Valley.

Students come from universities and SVST partner institutions, some of which provide full or partial scholarships to fund the trip. It is also possible to participate in the selection process independently, without being part of one of these universities or partner institutions, by following the directions on the SVST website.
Since 2019, the SVST has brought several LTF members to Silicon Valley through reserved slots for mentors and mentees.
The goal we have is to inspire other young people, hoping that the bridge between Italy and Silicon Valley will benefit our country through departures and returns to the homeland and development of our startup system.
In this wake, a series of seminars will start in September 2022 to tell the stories of young Italians who, over the past 20 years, have crossed our mountains and the Ocean to arrive in Silicon Valley to build their lives and often their companies.
Details of the meetings will be posted as we go on the LTF and SVST social pages.
In the meantime, you can find some of these stories in the book “Between Italy and Silicon Valley” produced in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

Nato is a Research Scientist at HuggingFace. He recently finished his Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences, advised by Professor Kristofer Pister in the Berkeley Autonomous Microsystems Lab and pseudo-advised by Roberto Calandra at Meta AI Research!

PAST: Ph.D. from Berkeley AI; Cornell ECE `17; Intern at DeepMind, Facebook AI Research, Tesla.

GOAL: To understand and develop safe and societally beneficial autonomous systems.

    Abstract

Reinforcement learning is a paradigm in machine learning that uses incentives- or “reinforcement”- to drive learning. The learner is conceptualized as an intelligent agent working within a system of rewards and penalties in order to solve a novel problem. The agent is designed to maximize rewards while pursuing a solution by trial-and-error. Programming a system to respond to the complex and unpredictable “real world” is one of the principal challenges in robotics engineering. One field which is finding new applications for reinforcement learning is the study of MEMS devices- robots or other electronic devices built at the micrometer scale. The use of reinforcement learning in microscopic devices poses a challenging engineering problem due to constraints with power usage and computational power.
